APA Style: Home

Attention

The 7th edition of the APA style manual was released in October 2019.

For an overview of changes, take a look at this excellent slide presentation prepared by Surry Community College.

Quick Tips

  • Font should be 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Calibri, 11-point Georgia, 11-point Arial, or 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode.
  • Double-space the whole paper, including title & references pages.
  • Use hanging indents on your references page. If a citation is longer than a single line, indent (Ctrl+Tab) every line after the first line. The first line of the citation should be left "hanging."

Instructor Alert

Instructors:  Please note that as of March, 2020, most of the citations in the database citation tools are still popping up in APA 6th edition.  We expect the database providers to catch up by fall semester of 2020.  In the meantime, please let your students know if the APA 6 citations they come across in the databases are not going to be acceptable to you.  Purdue OWL has updated to APA 7, with APA 6 examples still available if needed.

Main Changes

  • "Et al." is now used in in-text citations with more than three authors.
  • The words "Retrieved from" are no longer used to precede a URL.
  • The doi (digital object identifier) should be used instead of the URL of a library database.  The doi is usually available in the citation tool in a library database.
  • The doi must be formatted as a URL, for example    https://doi.org/10.1080/10696679.2017.1389242
  • The publisher location is no longer listed in the citation.
  • E-book formats, such as Kindle, are no longer required, but the publisher must be listed.
  • Bias-free language, such as "their" rather than "his or her," must be used.
  • More fonts are acceptable.
  • A single space, rather than two spaces, is now used after a period at the end of a sentence.
  • There are now two paper types, a student form and a professional form.  The student paper no longer requires the running head.
  • For details see the APA web site or Purdue OWL
